View Full Version : Show your LFS online-status icon (on other forums ;) )

Victor

Hi,

I have made a status icon script for you to use if you like. For example, you can use it in forum signatures (where allowed) or convince other forum admins to include a new profile field for this, so they can show your LFS online status :D

The following url will return a 64*16 gif image, depending on your status :

http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.LFSUSERNAMEHERE

example : http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.victor -> http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.victor
(if required, you can add the .gif extension to the url)

Here is a full example for forum-signature integration that additionally includes a link to the racer stats page on LFS World : http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.victor.gif (http://www.lfsworld.net/?win=stats&racer=Victor)

For vB and IPB (and other forums):
http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.USERNAME.gif (http://www.lfsworld.net/?win=stats&racer=USERNAME)

For phpBB and other forums (no quotes for URL):
http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.USERNAME.gif (http://www.lfsworld.net/?win=stats&racer=USERNAME)

If you use 'strange' characters in your username and have trouble getting this status icon to work, maybe you have to urlencode your username. The following webpage can help you with converting your username to an urlencoded version : http://www.lfsworld.net/urlencode.html

There are 4 status's :

offline
online
in pits
spectating

Let me know if you encounter any problems and enjoy for the rest.

edit - thanks to glyphon for the idea btw

** since this post was placed, things have changed a bit. It started out with suggestions for a better icon, which has been made now **

already a suggestion is it possible to make also the extension visible? (.gif or whatever)
if i want to put it in my sig for example there will be boards who refuse pictures without extension

simple, but it works. It'll be a good thing to put on team websites showing online status' of members in a simple way! :P

It could be black and white when the person is offline and colored when online. No idea about the pits and spectating icons though.

actually i was thinking more about keeping the icons 16*16 pixels, because that allows for more easy integration into forums. See for example the messenger icons in user's profile fields here. The lfs one could easily be added. And they mean the same (online / offline / away (spectating), etc just like regular messenger icons)

Victor

yes, that shape 'LFS' and then maybe an additional indication of the actual status like a wrench for pits, an eye for spectating, a wheel for in-game and something else for offline .. maybe a grey version of the 'LFS' shape

... animated or not, i don't mind :)

just for racers with an S1 or S2 license. Demo isn't supported since i grab the stats from .. well, the stats, which there aren't any for demo racers :tilt:

(ps i clicked the wrong button in your post - edit, and not quote - hence the edit by me in your post ...)

I don't think that the icon should be animated because you have to wait for the animated icon to 'blink' if you want to see the status.

Victor
5th November 2006, 23:44
true, and animated can also get annoying after longer periods.

About the LFS icon http://www.lfsforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=19038&stc=1&d=1162772472 I think the colours and detail in that small area make it hard to put something on top properly. It quickly becomes a garble of coloured pixels and so the trick is to keep it simple, giving the best contrast. See my skype icon for example - it's just one shape and one color (and a bit of shading) plus on top the indication of the status. It has to remain really simple for some reaon hmm.

Just giving my opinion :) I know it's hard :x

Here is some idea I had. Not sure what to do for "spectating" but I could put some binoculars or some face without a helmet I suppose :)

This at least gives the racing appeal since it is a helmet. 16 x 16 awfully small to put in a logo or any text, so you have to have some kind of symbolism. This at least uses colors to note the difference

mosquito25
6th November 2006, 00:03
Lol, ok now, Tweaker (got some Invalid Attachment) :p

Btw, is there any chance the script could be modified, using the identkey instead of the username?
In this case, we'll have to update the forum template, but all users will have to update their profile too.

Tweaker
6th November 2006, 00:04
It's because I had reuploaded them, look again.

Here is some binoculars for spectating if this seems better....

Also note that these are made for a WHITE background. On some dark forums, some white specs might show up, but I don't think they'd look bad. So I will make the 'universal' ones now without the white specs and see how they turn out.

mosquito25
6th November 2006, 00:08
Seems good for me, but I think it could be better to use a tv icon for spectating. Better than a color code IMHO (not enough difference between racing & spectating)
Edit : sry didn't see your last attachment before posting :p

mosquito25
6th November 2006, 00:11
Another idea : why don't u just return a code from 1 to 4, or a string, like this admin forum could create their own icons?
sry if it's stupid, don't have a big experience on forum templates ;)

Tweaker
6th November 2006, 00:15
I was thinking it would be a nice idea so that people can make their own icons, but having such a feature from LFSW would be nice... and keeping it to the same look so people familiarize themselves with it, that would be better perhaps.

I could work on the icons I made so that they are pixelated (not white matte) and can be used on forums that have different color schemes. Though I want to know if the icons are ok first.

Victor
6th November 2006, 00:17
hm, I'd vote for one look, just like all the other icons out there. One needs uniformity for easy recognition - not all kinds of different icons. It's already hard enough to come up with one good set.

And if people would like a bigger set, then that can be arranged from here imo. I don't mind making a second version that returns bigger icons or whatever

Victor
6th November 2006, 00:32
btw tweak, I like your approach for something other than the LFS icon, but i all of a sudden realised that the helmet might be mistaken for the R from the rfactor logo? :x

Tweaker
6th November 2006, 00:42
lol rfactor :x Helmet can be flipped around in the other direction. But ehh, I see what you mean. Going to try the other ideas now ;)

SamH
6th November 2006, 01:42
Is it possible to have options for 3 sizes? A 16x16 icon, with the best will in the world, will never convey to a non-LFSer, enough info without some additional "room", except to other LFSers who will recognise the icon immediately. Rather than miss an opportunity for a bit of free advertising... :smileypul

Tweaker

Have lots more to come.

BlackEye
6th November 2006, 01:46

As Sam said, to a non LFS-er it would be a mistery, but nothing better can be done with 16x16 icons.

Yeah that's the thing, it is very limited space
I like those, Tweaks! What about UserBar statuses? They'd rock!
What's UserBar statuses??

EDIT: oh

Anyways, my other idea (kind of like userbars) is that there should be a longer image so you can see text. For example, something like these 64 x 16 images :tilt: Doing these makes it possible to use a nice looking image on any background color (these are made for white, but the edges can be put to hard pixels)

Hyperactive
6th November 2006, 02:10
Nice ones, tweak :).

---
One thing that imho could be a little better is the signs, "online", "offline", "spectating" and "in pits". Why online, wouldn't "racing" be more descriptive and, uhm well, better because you are kind of online when you are specating or pits :shy: :D

Tweaker
6th November 2006, 02:30
I wanted to put "RACING ONLINE" in there or something, but I'd have to increase the width. I've made some other versions here:

But Victor would like it to say "LFS" somehow if possible. Eghh, lotsa ideas

Tweaker
6th November 2006, 02:52
And in trying to make the LFS theme similar, the "LFS" icon is placed on these. But since it is only available (and only looks good) on a black background, I've made these ones dark. And used some kind of 'light' on the end to help I guess

It's not easy coming up with something perfect. And even that icon is the old LFS logo, and the yellows and blues are no longer used, so it may or may not make sense even if the logo is used.

EDIT: And as an alternative, just the left side is black /w logo with a light version bar

Peptis
6th November 2006, 02:53
I think that the biggest problem is trying to convey 4 different types of status in a 16x16 pixels. One idea would be to have the 16x16 pixel icon just have online/offline information. The larger icons could however have all 4 status types.

Anyway, is it really important to know that someone is in the pits or spectating? If I see someone that I want to talk to, all I need to know is that they are online. Chances are that they are racing or about to race. Right?

This thread is about having the ability to show your online status on other webpages, like forums. You can do this by using the following url, which will return an image : http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.Blas89.gif ( http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.Blas89.gif )

About your skype status - check your options. You probably have the option to make yourself visible on the web turned off?

So I kind of thought the 'led' on the little image should be more noticeable, so that when someone is in fact online or whatever, it would stand out. So this is a bit of a different style, and I like it more to be honest:

EDIT: Also, Victor I was thinking you should provide the code for various forums so that the image can actually be linked (clickable) somewhere. Like this:

You can do that if you combine it with pubstats.

Well, it would make sense to use it in other forums to draw attention to LFS - but in the LFS forums it's sort of pointless since if you're online it's already displayed and clickable in the sidepanel on the left.

This script can only return an image. I know what you meant though, but that's techincally impossible without specialised code being used on 'the other end', so this is not really practical.
If you would like this functionality on your own website, where you have all the freedom to code stuff, you could, like xaotik said, make use of the Pubstats.

Yes you can add this image to your signature, provided the forum admins in question allow using images in signatures.

Using an url for your avatar is just not the way vB works. It stores your avatar on this server.
The advantage is that you do not need to have any hosting space of yourself. The downside I suppose is that you cannot change the avatar remotely, but would have to upload a new one when you want it changed.

nice, although I think it's a little too much reflection (aka Vista style) on your bars... it makes the top part unusable for text.

They're pretty, but IMHO, they're too large.

I've updated LFS France forum (IPB 1.3) to show the status in the author section, so the pic must be 150px large max to fit into the div.

Victor, I think there's a bug in the script :
I've stared a dedi server
Connect to the server : status spectating
Join the race : still spactating
On the track : still sectating.
Shift-S : status in the pits
Click on OK button : racing online.
ending race : still "racing online" ?

tryed 2 times, same behaviour

Hey viper Nicely done. How did you manage to get that working in the profile field? im having problems here.

Here's what I did:

AdminCP -> User Profile Fields -> Add New User Profile Field -> Single-Line Text Box -> Fill in the form with whatever you want -> Save

Note the internal name of the field (not what you called it, but what vB is calling it). Example: "field9"

Now go to Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> Your Theme -> Edit Templates -> Postbit Templates -> postbit/postbit_legacy (depending on what format you're using)

Then just add this in in the same area as registration date and such. You'll have to tweak it to match your theme and use the correct field ID.

<if condition="$post['field9']">
<div>
LFS Status:
<a href="http://www.lfsworld.net/?win=stats&amp;racer=$post[field9]" target="_blank"><img class="inlineimg" src="http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.$post[field9].gif" alt="LFS Status" title="Click to $post[username]'s full LFS stats" border=0" /></a>

i'm having doubts about whether it's actually better than the stats page though, as the hostlist will show nothing when the racer is offline, but the stats page will always show info about the racer, and also where he (or she) is online, when online.

anyway you decide for yourself :)

Yours is working Goran, it's just that images in sigs are not allowed here.

Here is the link from your sig in IMG tags...

Coolioz...

Like this:

http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.Tweaker.gif (http://www.liveforspeed.net)

For vB and IPB (and other forums):
http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.USERNAME.gif (http://www.liveforspeed.net)

For phpBB and other forums (no quotes for URL):
http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.USERNAME.gif (http://www.liveforspeed.net)

Neither of these work for Simple Machines Forums. Adding an HTML line will, however.

<a href="http://www.lfsworld.net/?win=stats&racer=LFSUSERNAME "><img src="http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.LFSUSERNAME.gif" width="76" height="16"></a>

There is a bug using the HTML method, at least in SMF. You must put four (4) spaces after your username in the URL code. Is using an HTML line a security risk?

Tweaker
7th November 2006, 19:25
Sure could be a security risk imo. SMF forums aren't that great to be honest Banshee. And enabling users to use HTML is something you don't normally want to do on any forums.

Apparently, using the HTML code is not letting this work. I've found that my forums is truncating url's at 50 characters, which makes doing what I wanted to do, useless. I've since gone back to the IMG bbc tags. :(

It's for use on other forums where IMG tags are allowed. And if you run your own forum, you can set up the feature in people's profiles, like what some have shown here already.

As long as you can get the forum admin/webmaster(s) to code something for the forum, you could be allowed to use it. I would just go ahead and create a thread and ask for the feature. You could either do what Viper007 did on his forum, or even create your own BBcode that is something like . This would allow for an image to be in sigs, but only the LFS image.

Best way to do it for sigs could be something like username, and it would generate the code and other parts like they should. Other people may prefer to code it in their forum, but there are many options still. Just ask, I am sure the feature would be allowed. Because the only reason most forums (like this one) don't allow images in signatures is because you end up having very large pages of posts with some signatures taking up more than half the page. Annoying, and signatures can get out of hand if not moderated... I'm sure you know what I mean. But you can always tell the admin/webmaster(s) that a 16pixel high image isn't that bad, I'm sure they'll understand ;)

might be caching - i'll try sending anti-cache headers along with the images to see if that helps.

St4Lk3R

might be caching - i'll try sending anti-cache headers along with the images to see if that helps.

The headers you send by now (the following)
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 09:18:50 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.7d
Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate
Pragma: no-cache
Connection: close
Content-Type: image/gif

Won't do the job in some Opera Versions IIRC. You should try to set an extra "Expires" header, which should contain a date in the past (in the same format like the Date-Header). Headers should look like this then:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.7d
Date: [actual date in GMDate format]
Expires: Wed, 1 Jan 1997 00:01:00 GMT
Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate
Pragma: no-cache
Connection: close
Content-Type: image/gif
Let's see if that helps (note the placeholder I set in the Date-Header in the second example, dont change this header manually - the webserver will do the job).

By the way: Apache 1.3.31? Thats old man (and insecure *cough*)!

Greets, Stalker.

caching means that your browser keeps an old image in its "memory" to minimize the load of the server and your internet connection. especially opera browsers have problems with caching, but other browsers also do sometimes.

the_angry_angel

Ok, so anti-caching means that it tries to remove that image from the cache? To be specific, the web server (in this case LFSWorld's server) will send additional information along with the image, telling the client (your browser), not to cache it in the first place. Some browsers can ignore this information, unfortunately.

You cannot "remove" things from the cache, per-say (if anyone wants to be picky, I'm ignoring content expiration hackery).

go to your ACP, Management, under the User and groups choose custom profile fields,

then choose Add New Field

put in the details you want then at the bottom put the following in the box:

{title}:<a href=http://www.lfsworld.net/?win=stats&racer={content} target="_blank"><img src='http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.{content}.gif'></a>

I think thats all that i needed to do. if it doesnt work let me know and ill look into it deeper.

why ...?That's impossible, mate. You are only allowed to put simple .jpegs or .gifs there without any linkings to other sites. And you don't really need this, because that small image under your post count does the same job and when you're online one more info line appears under your nick name which shows on what server you're racing. All in all, you don't need this :).

On long races, the button show that you aren´t online, when you are. If you join into spect, it shows ok again for a time, after that time, you´re "Offline" again :(

That can be solved?

Yes, works perfect in sprints races ( about 7 mins of Lengh ), but if you do a "long" race, about 40 minutes, you will apear offline ( remember that you can´t join in spect or use ESC + BOXES)..

Is very easy to reproduce, just try it..

Online at: lfs server

IIRC it is possible via LFS Pubstat system.

The toll works PERFECT Thanks a lot
You can see the result on http://www.liveforspeed.be

But is there also such a nice plug-in that checks the status of our server?

Thanks for the effort !!

I host a service that does this, with little status lights, but due to server changes, it is currently not functional. I will probably get around to this at some point tonight.

Someone asked about host information via lfsworld the other day, but i forgot who that was so i can't ask a follow up question. I'll do it here then :)
I've made something like this isonline icon stuff, but then for hosts. And not with an icon, but it outputs host status in text in HTML. The point of that is so that people can very easily put not only their host status but also its details on their own website, or whereever iframes are supported.

But now I'm just wondering a bit about how to make it look and :

1) do people want this to begin with? (host status shows all host settings and users, usable in an iframe only)
2) should i just give it a default look and if people want to they can give me a css file and i'll make that usable with the hostoutputs so people can make it fit into their website?
3) any other ideas?

guess i should split this off to a new thread soon :P

Everything in the iframe with default look or load own CSS styles. This is what I would want.
You could load your own CSS style on your account at lfsworld.net. There you could also adjust which data you want to get in the outputs.

Victor
24th December 2008, 21:31
Here's a very default look for those who want to give it a try : http://www.lfsworld.net/hoststatus/?h=Blackwood%20XFG%20XRG
Hostname needs to be an exact match for now. To make your own CSS you should just have a look at the source. Those who know CSS are bound to know where to look :)
I'll have a think about CSS being editable on lfsworld.

Drift King CZ
24th December 2008, 23:08
Nice. By the way about the exact form. It was meant for example like this: ^1Team ^7e^1NET^7i^1S
In result we get this: Team eNETiS (the "e" & "i" are white colored)
http://www.lfsworld.net/hoststatus/?h=^1Team%20^7e^1NET^7i^1S (http://www.lfsworld.net/hoststatus/?h=%5E1Team%20%5E7e%5E1NET%5E7i%5E1S)

And here comes next idea. You could add legend for the letters at the "Settings" row same as it is at lfsworld.net >> Racers & Hosts online >> Hosts - and in the bottom of content is the legend:

Legend:
-V you may vote
-S you can select tracks
-Q race qualify is enabled
-P private host
-F forced cockpit view
-C cruise server
-R host is connected to the InSim Relay
-R+ host uses Relay's anti-shortcut option (*)
-m join mid-race allowed
-p forced pitstop

EDIT: Maybe with the legend it will too much comprehensive. This could be also adjustable at lfsworld (if you want to show it or not).

Victor
24th December 2008, 23:12
yeah and some people may want to put more than 1 hostinfo frame on their website - there wouldn't be a need for the legend on all of them. I think people could add it on their end the best really and leave the hostinfo frame for actual dynamic data.

Drift King CZ
24th December 2008, 23:35
Hmm, yes you are right, didn't of it like this :/. Ok, last question.

I checked one my host: http://www.lfsworld.net/hoststatus/?h=^7ANTIK%20^4LFS%20Action%20^1Racing (http://www.lfsworld.net/hoststatus/?h=%5E7ANTIK%20%5E4LFS%20Action%20%5E1Racing)
The host is connected to the InSim Relay and the host uses Relay's anti-shortcut option, but I don't see R or R+ in hostinfo . What's wrong?

EDIT: Now the R works. Victor is probably working on it.

Someone asked about host information via lfsworld the other day, but i forgot who that was so i can't ask a follow up question. I'll do it here then :)

hey victor, mine's been acting up over the past few days... for some reason, the number of laps ends up wrong.

on the gt-m servers, i run 6 laps unless the track is kyoto-national or westhill, which run 4 laps instead. right now it says gt1 is running 6 laps on kyoto...

restarting the server corrects the issue temporarily, but that's a pain. any ideas?

one thing i just thought of, before i hit submit, this seems to have happened around the time i switched from lapper to airio... that wouldn't do this, would it?

ok, and now this is even weirder... lfsworld says it's also running 6 laps...

Victor
10th April 2009, 01:37
If you update the amount of laps in the lobby screen, there is no statistic sent to lfsworld. Only when the 'race starts' (exit lobby screen and go onto track) it learns about the updated number of laps. Or at least, that's what my test just now showed.
I guess it can be seen as a bug, because when you change track for example, then that change is reflected on lfsworld immediately. And also, upon that change, it should have told me the (new) number of laps, but it still had the old number.
So I'll make a note for Scawen to look at. And I think I spotted another bug too, so that's two bug reports in one :)

gotta bug you again...

today i checked my statii and i see this:

Mode: Demo, Race 5 laps
Track: Blackwood Car Park
Cars: XFG, XRGforgive me for being braindead (i just got off work ), but i thought demo users couldn't drive on the car park? :scratchch

edit: it seems that it appears that way on lfsw too... (how come if i set /mode=s2 it keeps changing back and forth?)

You should check how you can put images on your page. If you can link directly to an image via bbcode or html, then you can simply point the image to http://www.lfsworld.net/isonline.LFSUSERNAMEHERE using the approriate bbcode tag or <img src="" ... /> html tag.

If instead you have to upload your images for them to show up on your webpage, then it will not work.
