well, I have a problem with these patches ... since I have installed U25 my FPS decrease like hell .. before i was at almost 30 fps alone (24-25 with 1 or 2 cars more). But now when i play alone I have only 25 FPS and when there is another car on the screen i have only 12-13 FPS (°.°)
how can i fix that ? can you do smthg for me plz ? :)

thx :)You must get the U exe from your version U download, and copy it over your current LFS.exe
Then please come back and report if it actually solves the frame rate problem. That proves that the recent patch causes the problem. Otherwise you may have just developed some computer fault at about the same time as you installed the test patch.
And by the way, have you rebooted? I thought most people turned their computer off at night, so rebooted each morning. But there have been recent reports of people never rebooting their computer, and wondering why it got slow. That is the first thing to try.

@ Scawen : i installed LFS U and then patched to U20 and it was good with FPS (almost 30 alone and 25 with another car) then i installed U27 and i had this FPS bug again ... so i reboot my computer as you say but no effect .. 15 fps again with 1 car on the screen :s
hope you can fix that in the future patch :)

Can you try turning off some things?
SHIFT+N turn off sound
SHIFT+M turn off mirrors
Turn off trees
Turn off flags
Whatever you can find in the Graphics Options...
Maybe turning off one of these things will give you a great increase in frame rate and then we will have our first clue where to look for the problem.

Where can i get patch u24 back. Since that my fps has dropped dramatically. You can get it by editing the links to any test patch, just right click and copy shortcut.
But before you do, why not try and find out where the problem is? For example, if you switch off Sound or any Graphical features, does the frame rate increase? Because if we find that out, maybe I can fix it, or else you will be stuck on U24 for ever!
One other person has reported a loss of frame rate.

important message to scawen : i think I've found why FPS decrease since U25 :)
I tested few things but the only one who really change something with FPS is "sound". When I turn sound off I'm getting more FPS but not as much as in U20 .. So i think there is another reason ... but I think that sound is the major problem :) (maybe because you modified sounds blocs ... ;) )

Scawen : did you read my reply about FPS decreasing ? I think i have the solution :)
EDIT : ehh i think it's since U21 ... because I patch from U20 to U25 in one time ;) So the problem could come from U21, U22, U23, U24 or U25 ;)
if i have time and patience i will try every patch (from U21 to U25 ;) )

if i have time and patience i will try every patch (from U21 to U25 ;) )I am slightly disturbed by your loss of frame rate but so far we have only heard that from three people : you, siLc and robertchapple123. More than 500 people have downloaded the patch.
It's strange because I can't recall any changed to graphics and there are certainly no changes in physics (or the replays would go out of sync). As it is only affecting so few people, I don't have much to go on, and won't really do anything at the moment, with this small amount of info.
But yes, I would be interested to know exactly which patch seemed to result in the massive loss of frame rate. I'd also like to know if the frame rate is low when you have the game paused. And also what happens when you press SHIFT+F to remove the 2d display? These results will help to suggest if it is a 2d text problem or 3d graphics, or something else.

Well, you don't know how many people just download it, install it, and uninstall it again do to issues, without any reports.
I have heard about such things already a couple of times, where people knew how to reproduce a bug, but didnt post it. (I told them to post that here, or I posted those report myself)

Try upgrading to SP2, install all patches released after SP2, install the latest version of DirectX.

graphic card : Geforce 2 MX400 (well very bad i know :p )If there's one thing you can do to your computer, it's get a new graphics card.
I know you don't want to spend much money on your ageing system, but you really don't need to. GeForce 2 was a good card BUT it is about the last in the generation of cards that could not do hardware vertex shading.
There are so many old cards, nowadays low spec and cheap, that do have hardware vertex shading! Almost any card later than GeForce 2 will do the job! You only need a card from a few years ago to improve your LFS! :)
GeForce 2 runs ok with 1 car on screen but any more, it is struggling. Every vertex and polygon is sent to the card, every frame. With hardware vertex shading, the objects are already on the card, LFS just says "draw the object at this position" instead of sending thousands of polygons! So they do not suffer this slowdown. You will have a GREAT increase in frame rate with any card that can do HVS.

what do you mean when thinking to HVS ? (maybe Hardware Vertex Shading ?)
Scawen
29th October 2006, 08:38
Yes, Hardware Vertex Shading.
I thought you might be able to get an old graphics card that does HVS for a few Euros.
Other than that, I can't help because LFS relies on HVS.

Iīm using 1280*960 Pixels, 32bit colors, frames are over 70-80 constantly. Only time where Iīve had troubles was when I used the smoke mode (from Kegetys?) when a lot of cars went in the dirt.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 Processor
GeForce 7900GTX
Creative sound Blaster Sound card
Windows XP SP2
1GB DDR. (normally have 1.5GB)
With that, I am running a steady 140FPS (with other cars) and the lowest it drops to is 85FPS (auto-X)
I have not had the Frame rate drop or gain at all from U20-U28. (got new system at U20)

My guess is that it could be an old onboard audio driver that is causing the FPS drop.
The motherboard manufacturer might have an updated driver on their website.

There is also drivers directly from the audiochipset manufacturer (usually more frequently updated):

I suppose that this is the best palce for it, as it concerns framerate....
running U28, on my 3400+ Athlon 64 with a nVidia 6600GT and 1 Gig RAM, I get a 15-20% boost in framerate on Windows XP x64 over Standard XP Pro, but when I switch to Vista RC2 (also the 64bit version) I get a 50% DROP in framerate.
I should point out here, that I have a few less things running in the background on x64, no Trillian, and a different AntiVirus program, but not a considerable difference in resources used...
I did notice that my RAM usage 'at rest' (ie, on the desktop with just standard background apps) is about 75-80%, which doesnt leave a lot for other stuff...
what I was wondering is whether anybody with more (say, 1.5 Gig) RAM has tried running it on Vista RC2 64 bit, and what were their findings?

I noticed this also. C2D 6600 @ stock speed (2.4Ghz), 2GB DDR2 800, EVGA 7900GTO. I usually run with with vertical sync on so my framerate is pinned to the 60Hz refresh rate of my lcd, but when I look behind me it drops into the 40's. 1680x1050 32 bit. I have AA, AF and everything else cranked up as far as it will go.
On the other hand, it also drops into the 40's for just a second at a couple places on the circuit, like when approaching that big tire over the track (still a noob, mostly driving blackwood gt at this point), which it doesn't seem like it should do with the rig I've got, so it might be some problem on my end rather than in LFS.

Anyone who IS having problems with framerates, post as much truthful information you know about your system (drivers, manufacturers, etc.) so we can get to the bottom of this. It seems this is only happening with old systems that seem to be gpu and/or cpu limited.
While going through the U Test patches I didn't see much change in FPS but that was with switching different modified graphics card drivers. Either way I didn't have any big jump either way in FPS.

Also, the people that are having problems could run EVEREST Home Edition (freeware), then they can create a report (a list of their computer specs) by clicking Report -> Quick Report -> All pages. Or they could run the report wizard as well, selecting certain items to report on. Then you can see if it's hardware or software related or neither.
I attached mine using the Report Wizard to include everything but Network and Benchmark as an example. :schwitz:

Asus PSX-Series motherboard
256MB SD-RAM

With all graphics cranked I sit about 50 fps alone, and with 1-6 other racers I get about 30, and up to 12 racers I sit in the 20's. (That's only when all the racers are bunched around T1)

I`ve got over 80FPS in LFS, sometimes it goes to about 100, but when i have Girder turned on it lowers to ~60 or ~45 ... that program is for controling pc programs using an IR pilot. I don`t know why it lags so much, but it slows down the game like every 2nd second ;] (lol) so the best is to kill every needless apps before starting LFS :p

when i run lfs, without the limiter i have 499 fps constant (nvidia drivers have limited my fps)
i have QUAD Sli, (2x 7950gx2 graphics cards) aka four GPUs (equiverlant to 4 graphics cards)
but its best to limit frame rate to 150 constant so that the life of the graphics cards is longer.
to see motion instantly you need a constant of above 60fps.
with that said, i think lfs should higher the quality settings for people with better graphics cards like I.
and have better graphic reduction settings for low end users.
:)
by the way my specs:
intel core 2 duo (conroe) E6600 at 3.8ghz on liquid cooling. (dual core)

'' but its best to limit frame rate to 150 constant so that the life of the graphics cards is longer. ''
are u serious?..
Jimmy_Lemon
6th March 2007, 00:45
pit limiter off and on? what do you mean, i dont see no difference :S.
and yes i am seriouse. LFS isnt a graphical game compaired to first person shooters which i normally play.
and yes 500 fps with a full grid of AI.
i was in a 38 man race once (i think it was 38). and i got a lowest of 420fps. allways stayed above that tho, but on the streight where i could see every one else in rear view mirrors, i got 420 fps. and when i pressed rear view i got 420.
you should play games like Oblivion, or Armed Assault.
then you would know what its like to have a good machine.
lfs isnt a verry high spec required game compaired to new games like farcry, crysis, ETC.

im saying that LFS should make the game more higher resolution textures + more modern game graphics
and u expect every user to have a 3000$+ system? lol.
the graphics are fine as they are, surely will improve with S3.
until then better hardware will get cheaper and ppl can afford it actually and be up to date with the requirements for S3.
thats the way how it goes atm and i dont see any good reason why that should change.
and imo the graphics could be worse too, its mainly bout the racing not the graphics, thats just eye candy what u rarely realise while beeing in a "hot" race.
Jimmy_Lemon
6th March 2007, 15:35
all correct.
i never said they was bad, i didnt mean to cause every one to be like :really: ..
im just saying, for those users like me, there could be some more settings to advance the graphics.
but like i say. the game is the best one iv ever played for realistic physics.
no other game i can think of has things like the tyres that the side wall wobbles etc from the force

and yes 500 fps with a full grid of AI.unless you've got no AA i HIGHLY doubt this (even with your twice as fast CPU and about 3x more GFX power, it still doesn't explain why you get 16x my full grid FPS.
Firstly, enable AA and AF for gods sake! And some (aka a shed load!) of custom textures - my PC is hardly ancient (3 GHz AMD CPU, a single barely oc'ed 7950GT), but it can only do 8xAA with a full grid with all the custom textures, and it sounds like it will look a hell of a lot better than your 500000000000 fps no AA'd copyi get about 70fps on games like them :( low fps70 fps is by no means low, and with the refresh rate on your monitor it probably looks the same as 5000000 fps

I was just wondering if this happens to everyone else now that we have such large races, if there is a full grid (20+ cars) then when the camera pans around so that almost all of them are in full view the framerate drops significantly? My computer will go from 90+fps constantly to 30-45fps for a ton of cars on screen. In order to get it to not drop I have to set the car lod so low that cars nearby now look horrible.
I have a radeon x1900gt and amd 64 x2 4200

you shouldn't need to alter the settings, just ramp down the AA (4x will do fine).
The AI places a LOT of load on the CPU, so it is normal

In-game you can't. If you have NVidia's graphics card, you can do it from drivers in Windows. With Ati's cards, I think you need program called AtiTool (was it AtiTool? :shy:).

ATiTool does overclocking.
I think you can do it in the drivers in ATi, but its much easier with ATi Tray Tools (in the same way its easier with nHancer for nVidia)

thats pretty normall and AA/AF has nothing to do witzh that if you have something like X1900GT or 7900GS and up.

Would it be possible for people complaining about framerate issues in the newer patches to do a comparison using the Unofficial LFS Benchmark. The old replays can still be viewed when running the latest patch, so it should be very easy to tell EXACTLY how much faster or slower each new patch is. In addition, we can tell if the maximum frame rate or minimum frame rate is the most affected. That should help narrow down LOD problems if the minimum drops significantly but the maximum is relatively unchanged.

I just noticed this thread. I posted the following in the main test patch thread yesterday, but it seems like this is a better place for it.
People have mentioned the FPS issue caused by new, larger grids. At the moment there is a "Multiplayer Car Draw" setting, the purpose of which is self explanatory.
I think another option to limit the number of cars which can be drawn at the same time would be much more useful. If I only had 10 cars drawn at the same time, then I wouldn't get the game slowing down massively on the grid. However, I would no longer need a low draw distance and, on a long straight with a few cars spread out infront of me, I would be able to see those cars and not experience fps drops.
At the moment, if your PC can only cope with 10 cars on screen at once, you have to set a very low draw distance to avoid unplayable frame rates at the start. However, it can be quite frustrating to have cars flickering in and out of the draw distance when you only have one or two in sight, and it simply isn't necessary.
Sorry to bring up a suggestion in this thread, however, I think it would be a great help to a lot of people.

Also, your issue is no more important than anyone else's, so please don't post in all bold like that unless it's REALLY urgent.

Anybody who has frame rate issues can try changing the color quality on your desktop from 32 bit(high quality) to 16 bit(medium quality). See if it helps increase/or stabilize your frame rate.

Scawen,
I don't have an issue with FPS. However, I've had numerous instances where the game minimizes and leaves me on the desktop.
I can maximize the game again, but I can't explain why this happens so frequently ( every 5 - 10 minutes).
I thought it might be the Windows Auto Updater, but I disabled it and still have the problem.
Using XP with a modern computer and video card - been playing LFS since S1 and have never had this issue before.
I will try disabling any other resident programs tonight.

Keep ATIs 'Catalyst Control Center' (CCC) open in the background, if it does it just nudge any one of the settings and it should reset all your graphics fine. If it instantly blocks those out too then i've no idea, but i often race with CCC open on the other window because for some stupid reason if i go from full-screen to windowed (or alt+tab to desktop to do something) when i go back in ive lost my AA/AF settings and i cant drive like that.
I did fix it using a different refresh rate in LFS than on desktop, however it means it takes a while alternating those settings to go out of lfs and then back in again... very frustraiting.
Its nothing to do with heat or drivers, i've seen it on the odd occasion for a good year or 2, only recently did i realise i can just alter the AA/AF settings to re-vitalise things like losing my AA/AF settings and just the other day i had the blocked text, models turn transparent & background goes white etc and normally i'd reboot the PC but i tried tweaking the settings and it worked fine. Its like card struggles to hold the information in its memory and things grind to a halt and it ends up dumping the memory to get things smooth again, so you've lost all textures and stuff. My card is a X1900XTX (which is 512mb) and ive never seen it on any other game before and 512mb is plenty for textures which makes me wonder what it actually is causing the problems.

I've done a long FPS test doing one lap on 2 SO tracks, 2 FE track and 2 AS tracks in the X patch and now the new patch. On average I am getting 120 - 140 in patch x. In the new patch it varies by track:
SO tracks - 60 - 75
FE - 70 - 80
AS - 70 - 85
I have checked all settings and mimicked patch X settings and the results are quite different and a loss for the new patch. Still very driveable but a loss none the less :)

The card is onboard, the grafix card is clean, having an open case just welcomes more dust in really...(its sitting on the ground) I clean it about 3-4 times a month...I will try the CCC if i can find it anywhere.
Edit: and its not the drivers...if i update them its the same but when its normal I get WAY WAY lower FPS..

Quick question if I may, for you guys who have systems that are capable of in excess of 75 fps.
Is this because your screen has a higher refresh rate (i.e. more than 75 hertz), or is there a way to measure extra 'wasted' frames that the monitor can't use?
Cheers

i think its about how you setup your display driver, if you restrict it to your monitors refresh rate, no programm will send more fps, if you don't, it will send up to 100whatever frames to your screen nomatter if it can display it.
I have mine locked on 60 fps, for my screen using 60 hertz (Yakumo 17"TFT)

just because you have your monitor @ lets say 75Hz in windows, doesnt mean a game cant say 150fps, if you have V-sync then it will drop to what you set in windows. but your monitor can use much more then lfs can send anyhow :) i mean, your screen aint the bottleneck when it comes to FPS if you dont use v-sync..
i have my screen at 1280x1024@60Hz in Windows, w/o v-sync, and in LFS i have almost 170 fps constant...

I think the first thing I'll check is V-sync.
It sounds like that could be the culprit.

i meant it that way that the screen likely ignores everything above its refresh rate, it can't limit the ingame fps in any way (without locking in driver)

Your 17" screen aint gonna make lfs faster :really: . Maybe because your CPU/GFX card cant take it? Not every Brandnew computer's are fast.

I am getting a pegged 100fps but occassionally it drops into the teens for no reason, then seems capped at 30fps. Eventually the framerate increases back to the limited 100fps.

Big FPS decrease here as well
:weeping: I was so happy with the way the latest patches managed to run so smoothly even on my old PC. I used to have 60+FPS in single player, now I've only got 30-40.
Pentium 4 2.2GHz, GeForce3 Ti200 (yeah I know), 512 MB ram,...:sadbanana
It's hardly possible to play now, even if I turn off most of the options...
edit: tried again, it's not as bad as it was before, I've got almost 50 FPS. Probably there was some other application draining my cpu.
Nice patch! thanks a lot!
