Guys they worked like demons for nearly 12 months to give us what we have so let them have a break. I am sure they are cooking up some goodie for the next patch so just hold on to your panties and enjoy what you have.

XCNuse

12 months?!? 12 months?!?! .. more like several years :p

sometimes i feel like i want to know what it is they do every day anyway lol

we should have like.. just a week or 2 when they say what they do that day.. i would just like to see what they DO DO instead of getting a report every so often.. just like a week or so.. or every other day or something when they would just say what they did, i seriously want to know what they come up with and find to do every day.. i mean after a while.. you think you would get bored lol or not have anything to work on.. or something

FEANOR
7th September 2005, 01:23
So basically you want them to spend time writing a diary/blog/time sheet up instead of working on the game?

XCNuse
7th September 2005, 01:31
just a quick one.. not an autobiography lol

FEANOR
7th September 2005, 01:40
I think if they do it once a month its more than enough and anyway you should be racing and not on a forum (unless your at work like me).

Don't get me wrong, I understand where the desire comes from, but you can take it too far...

it keeps us entertained. Progress reports make me want the final more and more :D
To clarify, I'm not talking about progress reports. I just take issue with the apparent desire of some people to get 24/7 updates on everything the devs do. And some people will simply say it's just a joke, but if a bad joke is repeated too often, it's not funny anymore (if it ever was...)

Roadie
7th September 2005, 03:30
i never said 24/7, maybe like once a month, or every 2 months.

Mbrio
7th September 2005, 03:38
I wasn't referring to you ;)

And anyway, don't mind me. Maybe this time, asking for a progress report will result in one being given (I don't believe that has ever happened before though) and it's always nice to hear from the devs :)

Roadie
7th September 2005, 03:44
yah, you gotta keep the devs on their toes! Make sure they aren't out getting wasted every night. j/k

you could probably tell they have when they release a patch with beer truck racing :D ;)

Ahh... a status report! I sure would like to read something along those lines:

SCAWEN:
After thze recent updates, the physics-engine became that demanding, that whe had to completely cut it back to 3 basic values: acceleration rate, decceleration rate, turning rate.
To keep the community happy anyway, we added nitrous oxide injections to all cars, increased spoiler sizes and added a "base volume" option to the sound settings.

weve been spoiled with progress reports! i know no other company that gives them to the public.

we get a progress report when theres something to report, after the s2 release the devs took it easy to avoid exploding. do you really want a progress report when scawen changes his pants? or do you want him working on s2 ;)

if you want a progress report load lfs.exe

thats your progress report.

the whole freakin lfs is a progress report. :)

anyone wants to get busy, how about counting the amount of public builds since 0.04 ? all patches etc.
then get that number and check the amount of times people like kunos or isi games or simbin or westracing or iracing post about their games.
youll see that even just with actions and no words lfs crushes everything else as far as progress showing...
besides, scawen, as aim already set the goals for S2 so its not like he would say anything really new. its work thats left ahead not creative writing.
Although, just like u , i'de like a oneliner here and there, just saying "physics are progressing nicely" and "please excuse the mirrored texture" and maybe dreaming, who knows, one or two max renders from eric, with the caption "digital image taken from live for speed".

People really make me upset, asking every now & then for Progressreport, just to blame the Programmers if the posted things didnt appear in the next Release (because it just did not get ready in time)

You are right, its nice to have a Report to stay informed what may come next, but this should come initial from the Programmers and they WILL inform you if they have completed a new Feature.

I dont know exactly but I think they dont programm LFS exclusively, will say they ve other work to do.
Even if not so, they probably just get bored of programming the same Code all the time.
So what if they stay away from the LFS-Sourcecode for a Month to get their heads clear again? Its ok for me... ;)

I would like to have a Linux-Dedi (I dont want wine on my Server *G*) but they told me that they ve other priorities and I understand this.
So I dont asked him for a Date to release it nor do I want him to report on it or something.
If it gets done he will tell us i believe....

(I myself dont like those Managers sitting in my Back asking when their new Application is ready Day for Day, Hour for hour ...it just sucks)

Scawen

I dont know exactly but I think they dont programm LFS exclusively, will say they ve other work to do.In fact, this is our only job.

But we've needed a long break. July was to just relax after that hard Alpha push, August started with the little work for test patch P2 then an holiday for me. Right now I'm still on general life things, washed bike yesterday ready for its MOT on Saturday. Built a shed recently and bought a worktop and sink to build a new lower part of my kitchen. How exciting - I'm not sure you really wanted to know that! :D

Well loads of things really, but i'm not going to bore you with them as it's nothing to do with LFS... but just imagine for yourself if you had a house and did *nothing* on it for four years or so, and neglected all parts of your life that didn't need urgent attention, then there would be some jobs to do and things to sort out!

Same with Eric - he has had things to sort out as well. We are both *slowly* starting to do some work again. And whwn i say slowly, i mean slowly and gradually. So there won't be any significant progress to mention any time soon. It's more research and testing for some features and well known parts of LFS that need to be improved for S2 final.

It's wooden doors under a worktop surface that is a bit blue. But it's a bit hard to get started on the job seeing as I've managed to break the mains tap handle off its stem. It was seized and I had to use a mole wrench to try to gradually move it a bit this way and that but in the end, it just broke off instead of turning. Lesson to learn - DO turn the mains tap off an on at least twice a year or it will eventually seize. So I am investigating the outside mains supply stopcocks as well though one of them seems to be totally seized as well and another one is an unknown distance down a ceramic tube which seems to be full to the brim with an unknown amount of general crap / rubbish / life forms. Well apparently life is like coding, nothing's quite as easy as you expect!

Anyway it's been nice relaxing for these weeks. I can even do normal things like browsing around the internet following general interests, rather than having to dedicate all my computer time to LFS related things before my eyes get too tired each day. It's nice being normal, doing things at a relaxed pace and just doing whatever I feel like doing for a while!

I think those reports are excellent. Okay, so it's not really LFS related, but keeping the community abreast of anything Scawen, Eric and Victor do, be it kitchen improvements, recent parties, or major changes to LFS code.

Thanks for that Scawen. Whilst your post(s) make you seem human, I still regard you as a bit of a God... Hope you don't mind us bowing at your feet in October :P :D

Scawen, just wondering, but what bike do you own? And what does it need for its MOT?Here's some screenies of my ZX-6R. These pics are several years ago - it looks the same now but more scratched. It's 10 years old, 78000 miles on the clock, 100 bhp, 180 kg, very nice. :)

Nothing wrong with it this year for the MOT, just needed a clean, i'm sure it will pass, haven't done many miles since last year! Brakes are all good...

Two more OT pics for you. Slow progress trying to be able to switch off mains water supply.

One, this pavement tap won't turn, even with these two spanners on my socket set extension... if i turn any harder i think the pipe will break!

Two, this is the hole i've dug out today, it was filled in with stones and mud up to the level! The last few inches have taken a long time - i can only get a pinch of dirt each time. But now i can see a tap! :D

I hope i can turn this tap (stopcock) when i try tomorrow! That will be great because i'll be able to fit a nice new stopcock on the rising main in the kitchen... and finally can start on the worktop, sink and cupboards.

Nice bike, you need a belly pan on it though me thinks to finish the streetfigher look. ;)

Im guessing you crashed it, as it seems to have lost the fairing..

Thought you would have some brand spanking ducati or something, guess your not that rich after all.

As long as you enjoy it, thats all that matters though!

Your hands are dirty!!!! Well, gloves. I have the same gloves :P

Seriously, for the tap. Try WD40 or similar product. "Penetrating Oil" is what you're looking for. Leave the tap over night with plenty on the joints and pivots etc. In the morning, with luck, you might be able to turn it.

Another methods to try (either before or after the WD40 method) is to get some Pipe Freezer. This stuff is used by plumbers to freeze a section of pipe, so they can cut it out, without worrying about turning off the mains. Yuo can either use this to carry out the work in the house, or spray it on the joint. In much the same way that heating a nut and bolt works, so does freezing it. I assure you it won't cause any damage.

You might however (cause some, or recieve some when you slip and cut your knuckles).

Hope this helps. If not post again (or PM me - just fancy that, a PM from a Dev!!!!! I'd never close my PM box again...).

Just tried rFactor, and hurried back to LFS. Your work kicks ass!

The more I play LFS, the more I like it :) It doesn't needs new fixes, the only thing I'm waiting for an update, is the surprise of new features :) (like shift+L and F9, that helps me to create own sets)

Two more OT pics for you. Slow progress trying to be able to switch off mains water supply.

One, this pavement tap won't turn, even with these two spanners on my socket set extension... if i turn any harder i think the pipe will break!

Had the same problem when i tried to shut the water to my house off, shortly after we moved in. Completely rusted in place. Tried Liquid Wrench, everything. Finally I noticed that the previous owner added another tap to the main pipe by the house. It shuts the water off real easy. I guess it was rusted shut even when he lived there.

Scawen, now that you are relaxing from LFS and have more free time, you should do some sports. Looking at the pics you could really need some exercise, like going biking (the one where you have to pedal by yourself). :)Well yes some more exercise would be good but don't worry too much about my skinny legs - they are always thin no matter how much i exercise, but they are stronger than they look... anyway my big feet make them look extra thin in that photo... :DSeriously, for the tap. Try WD40 or similar product. "Penetrating Oil" is what you're looking for. Leave the tap over night with plenty on the joints and pivots etc. In the morning, with luck, you might be able to turn it.Agreed. The problem was getting the WD40 down there as the hole is only a tiny bit bigger than my arm. So last evening i just dripped 3-in-one oil on it, from above. Couldn't turn it by hand this morning (as expected) so i've made a special WD40 application tool with a tube on a stick - see attached picture. I'll apply that a few times today and make a simple wooden tap turner as well because i expect i'll need a bit more than my extended arm force...

(If possible i want to avoid the freezer spray method - i've already thought about it but really i should have an outside stopcock and it's a better solution if possible and could be helpful in a future water emergency. With the freezer spray i'd have to worry about the ice plug popping out half way through the fitting of the new tap, when i've hacked through the pipe - which could end up disastrous! And as i'm not a plumber it's not sensible to invest in the expensive professional pipe freezing kit with sleeves etc).

tristancliffe
8th September 2005, 13:05
Ha ha ha Fordie - I wonder how close that is to the reality...

Scawen: No, I didn't mean use the freezer spray to cut the pipes!!! Apply the freezer spray to the mechanism, thus making tha tap nice and cold. Then try to turn it. It works on rusty nuts and bolts on cars, but then they're generally not arms length down a hole.

The final option is to get a bar (metal or wood), lower it onto the tap somewhere where you can't do much damage, then give it a whack with a big hammer (of the sledge variety). This should break the rust/gunge/soil joint that is stopping it from turning.

If none of these work, I'm running out of ideas. So I'll just have to think of more comedy photoshops of your pictures...

Wow, I am excited now, because that tap can TURN!!!

Tristan - ok I get you now, you mean just like the well known heating of the seized thing, cooling it instead. I had thought you were talking about the other slightly risky "ice plug" idea that can be used instead of a tap. :) BUT... no need, as enough repeat applications of WD40 and just some gentle tapping a few times, has done the job.

Here's a picture of how the tap looks down the hole, and another of my tap turning tool, seeing as some of you seem to like my tools LOL - it's a simple groove in the end to grab the tap, and a hole at the other end for the handle... this would be strong enough to break off the tap completely, but i used it gently to apply a bit more torque than i could with my hand down the hole.

And it started to move! Just an eighth of a turn at first, but i've been going back to it, re-oiling, turning in and out a bit further each time, and i'm up to 1 and a half turns now... no rush, hopefully it will eventually turn enough to cut off the water supply! :D

Over at mine we've got 2. One in the house, and one out in the street. This means if you need to replace some stuff on the main incoming pipe, like the inner stopcock, you can without having a swimming pool in your house.

Isnt that wood a bit flimsy to turn a stiff tap? I would've thought that it'd have chewed it up!No, that's quite a strong piece of wood. Maybe my cat is bigger than you think. :D Anyway after my experience with the kitchen stopcock i do not want to apply too much force, this one has got loose enough by tapping and oiling. ORION
8th September 2005, 17:49
Remember the source engine is still quake 1, it cant deal with a huge area like blackwood...
It's still the bsp engine from John Carmack and it's main idea is to use the bsp system, which means the whole "world" is split into vis leafs, and you can only look into another under special circumstances.
This worked nicely for small maps with many corridors like in quake, but it sucks as soon as you want to have a landscape.

And of course the maximum size of a vis leaf is limited, Im sure something like blackwood will need like 100 times more space or so.

Scawen

LOL! I like the cat pictures! :D

Anyway a minor update : I didn't realise how close I was with one and a half turns. At one and three-quarter turns, the water is switched off! :) So now I really have an easy-to-use outdoor stopcock. I'm quite amazed as it was under an arm's length of mud and stones, must have somehow preserved it quite nicely in there. in future I will put a cover over the top of that ceramic tube.

So... next stage will be to replace the kitchen one so Geraldine and I can soon start the actual kitchen job. Probably will be a few days or even weeks before we start that, but possibly something on the weekend... don't know really but you'll hear if there is some progress. :)

Pipe wrench IS a cute little thing, and it DOES twirl on a pole (when you use it on pipes). Just had to make that clear

After a long time away from the internet (my 56k modem blew, so i convinced my parents that its a sign from god to get ADSL and i just got my line installed) I am back and I return to read this thread. I hadn't laughed that hard in ages. Thanks Scawen, you are the best. Its nice to see that you are enjoying your break and actually doing normal things for a bit. I almost wanted to cry in happiness by the time i'd finished reading it. I :heartbeat: this community. Some of the photoshops are hillarious. This thread should be stickied and have its topic changed to something more appropriate... any mods reading? I think that looks like a toyota judging by the wheel. I'm guessing Geraldine is the cat? Or is it the girlfriend? Keep them comming, Scawen. It would be nice if you can get Victor and Eric to join in... get them to take pics of their kitchens/means of transport/pet animals etc... It will certainly be good for the community to find out a bit more about the people they have been bowing down to as gods for the past few years.

errrr ... the latter ...

the question remains ... whos who ? i guess scawen is jesus as he is the one that contacts us the most ... and well ... he looks a lot like jesus too ...
and i guess victor must be the holy spirit as he is the one that helps people with their problems (has anyone seen him sitting in a bush with a lighter in his hands lately ?)
and eric is the one that doesnt talk to us at all but creats the world and everything around us ... makes sense ...

Actually he ""only"" created the laws of the lfsworld nature :)

Yeah, can we have some pics of the new renovated kitchen Scawen?

Can we have a guided tour of the house via a photo gallery :D I'm sure Scawen is careful about which pics to post, especially if they contain him, his cat, or any other living thing.

But that cat was amusing!!! Is he a nice friendly cat, or one of these sullen moody types? My brother has a cat that scares everything, including a Doberman (huge huge dog). Any other pets?

How about a few of us get together (yay, another LFS meet!) and do an impromptu 'Thorugh the Keyhole' on the devs houses. "Which dev lives in a house like this?.."

Don't want to start a flame war, but many here will admit that it's been some time since the last kitchen update. Now don't all jump down my throat, I know it'll be ready when it's ready, but all I'm asking for is a small comment, just something like "I bought a new wrench" or "I got my arse wet yesterday".

I understand Scawen has professional tasks like the rest of us, like coding some other trifling hobby he has, but really, I've invested a lot of time and effort into following this kitchen developement, I think we deserve a regular update.

I know other Devs working on home improvements don't post info about their DIY projects, and that's what makes this project so special, but it's not much to ask, just a small update, a pic of a leaky tap, anything . . .

Perhaps a poll would help. Give us further details of the unfinished project right now. We'll give feedback and assist with the completing of the plumbing as you need it. Then we could pre-commit to a second or maybe even third project in the future. It's what we're here for, after all.

WHAT?!?! Scawen is building a shed? We want pictures!! We want updates!! :D How about now that P(lumbing)1 is finished, what is in store for P2? Perhaps a garbage disposal? I'd like to see that. Or maybe an undercounter water filtration system? Maybe that will be an update for P3!

I guess from your handle that you've got a vested interest, but provided you know what you are doing and work carefully and systematically, DIY electrics are perfectly safe. Course you have to do your homework, and only ever do something if you are 100% sure you are doing it right, but its not exactly rocket science.

And now you have get it certified under part P anyway.

Thanks for the plug Fordie ;) I really should get my site finished , but that means even less time for online racing hehe

And now you have get it certified under part P anyway.

spot on Col :)
Part P was introduced this year to prevent DIY disasters and to ensure electrical work is carried out or at least tested by qualified personel , However the part P domestic installer scheme (available to the almost unqualified) does not cover kitchens or bathrooms ;) (or sheds LOL) if anyone really really wants to DIY with the wiring in their own house and even 100% confident , please please SWITCH OFF THE MAIN SWITCH to the whole house before doing anything and get a qualified electrician (NICEIC registered) to check it out straight away .That said I'd have to recomend not to DIY with electrics unless competant.

Wow that was so off topic ... sry :D ok back to topic (almost)

What type of shed do you prefer shiplap or TnG? creosote or cupronol?

and Im curious what have you plugged the tap hole (in the garden) up with ? :)

I can vouche for that. The guy, My Mr Sparky comes down for the T7R party, and fixes my electrics in my front room.

I have dimmer switches that actually work.

Forever Greatful Sparky
