View Full Version : Using menus with wheel.

Should be very comfortable to be able to navigate through the LFS menus using the wheel instead of having to use the PC keyborard to press the escape key and using the mouse.

This could be easily accomplished being able to asociate the current 'esc' key functionality to any of the wheel's buttons (this can be done with logitech profiler right now), having a focused menu item controled by the wheel and allowing to use the pedal as the mouse's left click.

Greetings.

Sounds like one of those arcade games where you put coins to play, thanks but no thanks :)

Yeah, tthe most annoying part of CMR2005 (despite the driving itself) was the horrid menu conrol via the game controller (being the wheel...) and the lack of proper mouse support... a no no in PC games IMHO.

ANd concerning LFS: I don't really care. It is not like anybody would be forced to navigate the menus with the wheel, is it?
Still, I find my mouse/keyboard combo much more comfortable and quicker than a wheel... I suppose thats why most operating systems prefer them over the latter :D

Its not too bad a suggestion, I would like to see more keyboard control in the menus, shortcut letters and cursor keys being a couple. Could even use the mouse wheel a bit more too.

I wouldnt use the controller to navigate but I suppose some people would.

Can someone make a plugin to use MS Word with my wheel? I'd also like to be able to send emails using the power button on the front of my PC... Can anyone help?

:D

I think this is misundertood.

Adding this feature doesn't affect the current one menu navigation. In fact, adding shotcuts and the feature to associate the keys of your own to the menu navitagion functions (the same as you have now in the control options) is the this feature done.

hehehe

well there is a slightly more serious note too, accessability. Some people with different types of disability might not be able to use the mouse fully, thats why Windows and other programs usually support more than one control method.

Personally im a bit of an old school computer user so I use keyboard shortcuts before I use the mouse most of the time.

Remember, there is a guy who plays LFS using his TONGUE!!!!! I can't remember the details, but if you can race the AI steering with parts of your mouth, then ANYTHING is possible!!! I guess he also uses his tongue to control the menus, but I didn't ask.

The thread is on RSC. I'll try and find it later, and post a link here.

I remember that thread. Damn impressive guy - I've never seen anything quite like it. He was even quite competitive :)

I'll play devils adovcate - just because we may not like the idea, it doesnt necessarily mean we shouldnt be thinking of other input methods either.

I think its quite a bad idea. Maybe implement it, but also let us use our keyboards and mouses. I can navigate very fast with keyboard and mouse, but a wheel, you have to go thorou every single option :S

Who said anything about only 1 type of input? Nowhere was it said to REPLACE.

I certainly feel that no one would want the native keyboard/mouse navigate removed. Think of it as another option.

Edit: Think of where this would be useful - game shows, where you have limited space. Other kiosk style environments? Do you really want to waste space with for a keyboard?

Look at it like this: if Scawen programmed a such a wheel menu system it would be truly intuitive and useful. Not the way some Codema$ters hacked it together.

So IMO this idea is

The only problem I see with it is that you sometimes access the menus while driving so the wheel would already be in use.
