View Full Version : Taking over (multiplayer) from AI/AI taking over

So i figured... when S2 is fully completed and the AI's are fixed up; i say we should have an option to set it so an AI can "take over" like we can take over already

i figured this would be helpfull in most situations when your tired (enduro races), and your teammate that is supposed to get the car from you .. well.. isnt there just yet and to tired to race and start making a ton of mistakes

any thoughts?

i dont think the AI will ever be good enought to do that. but as cool as an idea as it is, what would happen if your AI stuffed up. Or if u made this pro AI and just let him race teh hole time...

I dont think that will be too hard to code in for them.

you can train the AI to be better you know :)
some of my AI run faster times than me :p

this would be in a worst case scenario

SID135
3rd September 2005, 14:56
I knoqw u can train them, and thats what i mean, what would happen if you train up your AI to be better then you, and then use him in the races, i mean, its as good as cheating...

Are you saying that you should be able to let the AI take over in an online game?! I don't think AIs should ever be allowed online.

If your teammate is late, then tough luck. I think letting AIs race would be unfair on many levels...

XCNuse
3rd September 2005, 15:44
how so?
its another racer is it not?

now im not saying using the AI as YOU.. im saying using it as a replacement..

ooooor.. during a person / AI race, where everyone races for however long, and then their AI's take over for the rest

(btw, happy Bday sid :) )

Ok, how I understand it the proposition is this: You're in an online endu race with driver change. Your teammate is late. You're getting tired. You want an option to let an AI driver take over and race for you for a while. Am I right?

If so, the other people (real drivers) would be racing an AI during their online game... I wouldn't like this. I go online to race real people. And even if it's a last resort type of thing, the mere fact that it's possible to encounter an AI online would be a bad thing in my book, sorry...

Edit: It also kinda defeats the purpose of an endu race... Their meant to test endurance, and if you can switch to AI if you're concentration wears out it would be less fun...

XCNuse
3rd September 2005, 16:11
that was just an example, but you do see its purpose.. so..

i mean its kinda like what alot of games have (GTR has it that i can think of off the top of my head) not really sure why.. but i just think this would be something interesting.. just to be able to put an AI in for a lap or 2 or whatever.. and then take it back

oohh .. okay so your in a race.. and you have to go to the bathroom rE^93281321ally bad... now what :)

:D

I see the ''problems" you're trying to adress, I really do. I just think that no situation warrants putting AI drivers on track in an online game, even if it's just for 2 laps.

Go to the toilet before the race. Make clear appointments with teammates. If you still gotta go, make a long pitstop. If you teammate's late, drive a few extra laps. If your concentration is going, drive more carefully. I can imagine all these situations arising in a real life endurance race and those people just have to deal with it too... These are the things that make endurance racing fun and exciting.

I dunno, I quite like the idea, it certainly has several advantages that I would find particularly useful. However it's completely unrealisitic when you think about it. But then we always need to make certain adjustments for sim racing anyway, as much as we're trying to replicate real life it's still an electronic form of entertainment.

LOL.

Hence the advise "If you still gotta go, make a long pitstop." ;)

But it seems we're just gonna have to disagree on this one and let the devs decide...

I have heard that real life race drivers really do pee and maybe even shit in their pants if they really have to during a race...

..oh.. i know they do lol.. dad told me :p

great idea!

it would add a very nice dimension to have AI team mates, im sure scawen could code that!

But what`s the point for AIs to overtake actually? I mean that AI can drive 200 laps without overtaking... but ofcours he/she needs fuel.

Mbrio
4th September 2005, 15:24
Would be useful if you need to pee during a long race :)

Mikkel Petersen
4th September 2005, 16:15
But then there should be a time limit on how long time the AI drivers could take over. In theory then the AI drivers could drive the whole race for you. So basically I don't like the idea!

XCNuse
5th September 2005, 01:12
well of course there would have to be a limit or something.. i mean.. whats the point of sending an AI out to race for you.. since you arent actually racing? i mean it makes since.. really.. like if you had a 4 or so hour race in the middle of dinner, and just ate at the computer.. and so you could set the AI out for you.. eat.. get it to pit, and take over :)
(this would make a great race if we had nighttime :) )

SID135
5th September 2005, 01:14
I think, if anything, it should be in a for of a lap limit. like 2 laps / no overtaking. humans can pass the AI< but it cannot overtake. That would be cheating in my books.

If u want you use AI if you gotta go pee, etc, then if u loose a postion, then thats too bad.

XCNuse
5th September 2005, 01:16
.. that would be retarded.. then someone would get in front of your AI and just go really slow ... your AI should be able to pass...

yall are taking this the wrong way.. you see it as something bad

SID135
5th September 2005, 01:40
If its a proper race, then people wont do that.

XCNuse
5th September 2005, 01:51
if its a "proper" race.. then its going to be organized extremely well; but 4 or so hour races.. arent

frokki
5th September 2005, 07:24
I do not like the idea. There's no quarantee that everyone's AI is well trained and wont nail you from the back in T1. I could never trust an AI driver as much as a human competitor. IMO the AI taking over your car in multiplayer race is stupid.

And i agree.

Shotglass

it might be a good idea to enable an ai driver that pootles round the track if a driver gets disconnected during a endurance race
losing a 6 hour race because you get connection problems in the last hour has got to be frustrating ...

XCNuse
5th September 2005, 13:13
there you go.. thats an excelent reason shotglass!

@frokki; thats why im sure the devs will give us "reasonable" AI's.. unlike the ones in S1 that would run you over

SID135
5th September 2005, 14:51
I dont think AI should be used online at all... ever.

XCNuse
5th September 2005, 15:22
well.. thats one thought..
(may/may not make a difference.. so lets hear from some others first)

SID135

yeah, i mean, i can see we're your coming from, i just fear this could/would be abused.. thats all.

I kinda like this idea and I would use it if I had too. Races that have driver changes require the user to switch drivers after a certain amount of time (or you get penalty/DNF by a league admin - or so it works here), so the AI shouldn't be able to race the entire time for the player unless he or she wants a penalty/DNF.

I reckon have this disabled unless a driver change is required for a particular race. If you need to pee in a normal race (race without driver change), to bad just spectate. You're going to loose time and places pitting to switch to AI if others don't have to, so why bother really? :) Just pee/crap yourself or hold it in... no autopilot in motorsport hehe.

Edit:

So I for it in a race where driver change is required, but against the idea for all other uses. Just name the AI and it will be a bit more human ;)

This reminds me of an old story about the legendary driver Tazio Nuvolari. His mechanic (they used to carry the mechanic with them in the 1930's/40s), after he saw liquid flowing across the floor of the car was about to tell Tazio pull over for repairs when he realised that the fluid was not from the car at all. Nuvolari shrugged it off, the race was there to be won and he wasn't about to lose time by stopping for a pee. :D

But don't forget t put plastic over your seat and floor...
Or just set up your rig at the loo.

A better idea would be for LFS to remember how many laps you have done, then when you re-connect you can resume from that point.

As for the idea of an AI taking over for you online I can't say I'm in favour of the idea.

oh I agree, but when you think about it, just about everything that can be abused.. usually is so.. owell :S

SID135
6th September 2005, 12:52
but this is realy open to abuse.. i mean, if you ai can do 1:26 (example) and u do afrage 1:30, unhoniest ppl will use the ai...

6th September 2005, 14:31
IMO all the driving online should be done by humans. If you're in a team and your teammate doesn't show up, that's his fault (don't race with him the next time etc)

Toilet breaks.. hmm. Take your PC closer to the toilet before endurance races so you can pee during a pitstop (a short run), or get one of these:

Simbucket works quite well too. And during the month of September Simbucket comes with simPeg for your nose. Free of charge!

Would be nice, but only if the server can disable the feature's use. It would be nice if you could set it to do the driving just for a bit while you adjust your pit strategy too if necessary. :)
