Then you don't understand the concept of bandwidth usage not being free.

I found the fact that Victor gave him a lecture about being honest just a tad funny after i got punished for doing just that today. (see sig) *waits for pm saying i am banned*

My only problem with Phlos is that he is way too fast in the fox, i can't catch him up :(

EDIT: oh and he prefers hot lapping to racing...thats just wierd :S

I gotta say, closing threads... I used to do it a lot on CRC, but I've learnt that a thread is over when its over, not when a moderator or developer closes it, someone will always open another if they have something to say.

Ive noticed the attitude change of Moderators and Developers for a while and Ive posted about it before, only for that itself to be met with abuse. I think there are quite a few double standards going on around here. Its not right, and its not a great message to be sending to the belovered community.

Again my thoughts. Wonder whats next.

Hmm quicksilver, sounds like you're quite upset about this whole victor thing. Whilst I agree your post wasn't nasty, it would have upset the OP. Karma? Anyway, if you get banned I wouldn't be at all suprised. This really shouldn't be discussed outside of PMs, let alone being in your signature... talk about making things worse for yourself...

Can't say I feel any sympathy here.

Showing everyone private conversations between you and devs...real classy. You may not care about sharing private conversations but I guess you didn't ask the other participant in that message if he cared...

Anyway, if Vic gave you a yellow card because you snaked a guy just for posting a passing move I don't blame him...god, if it was that average a passing move, why even post? As if the guy cares what you think. Like my mum says, if you can't say something nice, get your stinkin' hands off my vodka.

This isn't a democracy, it's a private forum paid for by the developers. They get to set (and enforce) the rules. If you're going to prickle some guy for nothing, cop your yellow card like a man and don't whinge about it. Noone cares.

I hate any of the predudice (sorry i cant spell) *waits for PEST to jump in* towards demo races. I was once one before S2 Alpha was released last year. Demo races are trying out a piece of software that if they dont like that much they dont have to buy, its not sponging or anything like that. Demo racers are not doing anything wrong.

But thats another arguement for another day.

If rules are going to be set, they must be enforced, respected and kept too, this means that if one person gets "told off" for a particular thing, others must also. Not saying they are not, not saying they are, not even saying there needs to be evidence. But, there could be a friendlier way of actual "typed, intended tone" for want of a better way of putting it.

Demo races get accused of cracking, people who post up about laps for others to watch get flamed... Result, Mods and Devs getting openly angry on what are public areas of a forum for a community who are wanting to be here and wanted to be involved, who keep coming back, and are still taking things that double standards are still allowing to go on.

Again, just my thoughts. Im tired, im going to bed, I expect this will be closed and there will be another thread about this thread which was about another, and it goes on..

Hankstar
14th August 2006, 03:56
I guess that's another issue - so many threads seem to get started in response to other threads which got closed because they were getting ridiculous...it'd be nice if people wouldn't pollute the main page with stuff like that, it can't be a good impression for a new or casual user.

How about, instead of locking this thread up like it perhaps will be, just kicking it to the Rant Arena? Then it'll just die of natural causes or people can just argue in circles there until they lose interest and start another thread about another thread. This one probably should have gone to Rant Arena to begin with...

Hankstar

Opinion doesn't equal truth. What he got booked for wasn't his honesty, it was his disrespect of the OP.

I haven't seen this passing move that was apparently so average...you know why? Because noone made me click on it. I have better things to do than watch other peoples' replays. But if I did see it and thought it was average, I wouldn't have wasted my time turning my nose up at the guy for posting it. How does that help? What does it solve? In what way does it contribute? Plenty of others posted and said "well done" etc. because they liked it. Jeez, let a guy have some fun ffs. If Victor wants to book someone for acting like a snob...well that's fine - his forum, his rules. I'd expect the same if I insulted you for posting a replay which I though was lame. Plus, ATC's response of sharing his & Victor's private correspondence shows a petty side which really is not cool.

If mods/devs seem to have short fuses these days I'm not surprised. The bullsh-- factor here has risen lately and I guess they're just trying to keep up.

Simply put... the more times the servers get hit retrieving info, the more bandwith that gets used. Enough hits, the server lags, then people will complain how slow the sites are. :) Easy enough to understand? Which would you rather have... a nice looking pie chart that temporarily satisfies your curiosity... or a smooth running forum? :)

Trust that the Devs have a lot more knowledge of Phlos than you do and are handling things in a way they deem appropriate. :) Do I have a problem with him? Can't say. Don't know him that well. This isn't my house though, not my call. :)

As much of a shock as this may come to some... the Devs are human :shy: and have human emotions. If you expect them to just sit back and take it when people are being obnoxious or whatever... that's not fair. :smileypul

Rules can't always be written in stone. One person who may make an annoying post... might get off easier than someone who constantly makes them. That's not a double standard. To me it says the more annoying person kept pushing things and being given one chance after another until enough is enough.

Posting in a thread simply to insult someone is totally different than giving a negative opinion on a vid, skin, wallpaper, or whatever, that the person did. If you don't like the work, fine say you don't like it. Don't make it a personal goal to belittle the person. :shy:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the mods and Devs are doing a wonderful job running these forums. It's not an easy job and sometimes things have to be handled by judgement calls. If a lot of people are being annoying and obnoxious at the same time... expect things to get a lot stricter than they normally would. :)

It seems like some people aren't understanding what Phlos has done, probably because the whole scenario refers to an internet business which is sometimes difficult to get a proper picture of.. so I just wanted to put this in a real-world example, so everyone understands.

Live For Speed is NOT a PLC. It's a private business, privately owned, and its internal business and financial information are private.

Phlos wanted access to information about LFS, that he wasn't entitled to and Victor has made plain on many occasions that he wants to keep private, regarding the internal workings, membership and revenue of the private business. In the real world, this would be information locked in a filing cabinet, in an office with the door locked.

When Phlos was not allowed access to the information, he decided to break in and take it anyway.

Phlos then published the private business information he'd collected, that he'd stolen, in a very public place.

Victor complained that he'd 1) done it, and 2) consumed 12Gb of bandwidth in the process. This would be equivalent to leaving the place a mess with broken glass all over the place - i.e. with resulting costs that must be met by the devs.

Phlos complained that it's Victor's fault that there are costs to be met by the devs, because.. they didn't let him in willingly. They locked the door, and didn't cut him a key.

Phlos is seriously out of order. Nobody can possibly justify breaking in and stealing data that they're not entitled to. Nobody should be trying to support this effort of his, to steal and publish that information, either.

Right, so what you're saying is - there are lots of people who have tried the demo and not bought it, and that must make it an unsafe purchase?? Or perhaps lots of people have made multiple demo licences over the past 4 or so years.

Take a look at rFactor (19 people played it an once once) and nKP (3 people have managed to load it). I think you'll see that for a niche market (not a mainstream, dumbed down arcade game like GTR or GT4 etc) LFS is pretty popular.

But anyway, if you don't want to buy it because lots of people didn't then I shall pity you quietly in my dreams and try to understand what think you aren't missing out on.

It's a vague effort to simulate the keyhole shape in the Barricade logo. In its thread, [B], (B) and (iB) were proposed, to mark Barricaded servers. (iB) was the one that stuck :)

Oh thank god for that, I thought Apple where involved... ;)

@Tristan, ironically the demo user usage compared to licensed usage actually showed a phenomenal conversion ratio - most demo software has around a 1% conversion ratio, 2% is considered good. LFS has WAY higher, and that guy wont buy LFS because there are so many demo users ... lol.

I leave Phlos with 1 tip: Never use 12 GB of LFSW bandwidth. We like that bandwith for seeing how many ms we are off WR's and such, not "ZOMG, THE DEVS HAVE LOTS OF MONEY!"

So why you care about bandwidth usage now ? Because Victor told you "12 Gb" ? :scratchch
